Time: Thursday 3rd January 2019
Synopsis: The Context of White Supremacy hosts our 10th study session on Dr. Tommy J. Curry’s The Man-Not: Race, Class, Genre, and the Dilemmas of Black Manhood.
We were inspired to read this text after studying Pamela Evans Harris’s Black Love Is A Revolutionary Act – an error-filled, poorly researched book that unmercifully batters black males from beginning to conclusion. Many listeners – male and female, found nothing wrong with black males being verbally berated and accepted the presentation of black males being the primary obstacle to ending Racism. Dr. Curry’s 2017 publication directly addresses black misandry – dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against men.
The book explores how multitudes commonly charge black males as being guilty of patriarchy and hatred of black females, while the evidence shows black males lack the power to protect themselves much less dominate anyone else. Last week’s session emphasized how black people are often asked to hope that there are moral Whites who will stop terrorizing black people. Dr. Curry stresses that there is an absence of evidence to support a “hope” in well-meaning White folks. The text also describes how the constant threat of death impacts how black males “live.” In fact, such an existence, confined by unrelenting assault, does not qualify as life.
