Nehanda & Assata: Beyond Symbolism & Hashtags

Kicking off Black August 2020 and our Black Feminist Political Education month, on August 4th Black Women Radicals in collaboration with Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (MXGM), hosted a political teach-in led by MXGM members on the life, politics, and leadership of revolutionaries, Nehanda Abiodun and Assata Shakur. MXGM members and panelists Chinganji Akinyela, Darasia Selby, Zalika U. Ibaorimi and taliba shared their personal and political insights and perspectives on why we must be serious in our interrogation of the work of Nehanda Abiodun and Assata Shakur beyond aesthetics. Moreover, they emphasized the critical need to have a radical gender and sexual politic of care, one that centers Black trans, queer, cis, and gender non-conforming and non-binary people’s activism and leadership in revolutionary nationalism.
